’10 to Track’ soccer matches – Midweek Edition: bring us Champions Leagues!

The ten most important games to follow for us – the newish American fans – is largely an easy call when Champions League return!   CONCACAF and UEFA lead the way for your Tue-Thurs. edition.

Tuesday, 4/10

  1. New York Red Bulls vs. Guadalajara – CONCACAF Champions League

This is the second leg of a Semifinal.  NYRB performed admirably in Mexico in only losing by a goal (0-1), but may desperately end up wishing they’d managed an away-goal.  They’re only and even match at home for (an admittedly LigaMX-struggling) Guadalajara.   (8:00 PM Eastern, Univision Deportes)

RESULT:   0-0     The Guad Squad advance to the Final

Well, sure!   It’s wiings with two, maybe three i’s.   Whatever that’s ever meant.

B.  CF America vs. Toronto FC – CONCACAF Champions League

Toronto won the first leg of the other Semifinal 3-1 at their place.  And they will likely need every bit of that lead at Estadio Azteca.  Unlike Guadalajara, America is not struggling in-league.  If they turn up the heat, this will be interesting and then some despite the two-goal margin.  (10:00 PM, Univision Deportes)

RESULT:   1-1     Toronto vs. Guadalajara in the Final!

  1. Manchester City vs. Liverpool – UEFA Champions League

This has decidedly not been a good last several days for Man City.  First, they lost the first leg of this Quarterfinal 0-3.  Then they missed their feel-good chance to officially win the Premier by beating Man Utd at home by blowing a 2-0 halftime lead.   (2:45 PM, ESPN Deportes)

Man City at home might be a goal, goal and a half better than Liverpool.  But three?  No.

RESULT:   Liverpool   1-2   On to the Semifinal!   Noob didn’t include the other Quarterfinal today because it looked over.  “World’s best” Barcelona had a 4-1 lead from the first match.  But wow, AS Roma won 3-0, advancing on the tiebreaker of having scored an away-goal!

  1. Bosnia and Herzegovina vs. England – women’s World Cup qualification (UEFA)

England trail Wales by a point for 1st in this Group of five.  But they’ve played one fewer match than Wales.  More importantly, they’ve outscored all Group competition so far 15-0.  B&H aren’t even top 50 in the world.  They’ll get stuffed here like a meat pie.

RESULT:   England   0-2

Image result for that almost made sense

  1. Ireland vs. Netherlands – women’s World Cup qualification (UEFA)

These two are tied for 1st in their Group, and themselves drew 0-0 in their first meeting.  The loser today will likely finish #B, but be among the top four of all Group runners-up and get another chance to qualify for WC.

Netherlands are a top ten team in the world, and today is when they likely show their strength, get the big road win.

RESULT:   Netherlands   0-2

  1. Scotland vs. Poland – women’s World Cup qualification (UEFA)

These two are #3 and #B in their Group, with just a point separating them.  Neither will catch unbeaten Switzerland.  Both should be playing to win, increase their chances of being one of the best runners-up and moving on to one last qualification Round.

RESULT:   Scotland   3-0     This one was scoreless until pretty late.  Then Poland lost  a player to a red card.

They’ll have to do an updated printing.

Ok, maybe not.

Wednesday, 4/11

  1. Necaxa vs. Toluca – Copa MX

It’s the Final!  Necaxa do actually get to host, no neutral field here.  They’ll need every advantage they can get.  They’re not even in the playoff Liguilla picture in LigaMX currently, while Toluca are in 1st.

Still, Noob finds this to be a tossup.   Their goal differentials would indicate this is a surprisingly even matchup.   (9:00 PM, Univision Deportes)

RESULT:   1-0    Your Clausura Copa MX champ!

  1. NYCFC vs. Real Salt Lake – MLS

It’s early, but 1st-place NYCFC are the lone undefeated team left in the Eastern Conference.  RSL is in 4th in the West, should get overwhelmed here.   They can’t play a lick of defense.   (7:00 PM, NBA League Pass 10)

RESULT:   NYC   4-0

Defend thyself!

  1. Bayern Munich vs. Sevilla – UEFA Champions League

Bayern win 1-2 at Sevilla in this first leg of this Quarterfinal.  Noob was surprised it was that close.  The German league winners are one of the four best clubs in the world.  Sevilla aren’t looking like they will even finish high enough in La Liga this year to qualify for the next CL.

Bayern flexes today, wins by 2+.   (2:45 PM, FS2)

RESULT:   0-0    Bayern moves on

  1. Palmeiras vs. Boca Juniors – Copa Libertadores

Two of Brazil and Argentina’s best collide in a matchup that will be super sweet.  Unless they all lay back and settle for a draw.   The top two in each Group will advance to the next Round, and Peruvian Alianza is very unlikely to play catch-up.   (8:45 PM, Fox Deportes)

RESULT:   1-1

In South America’s Champions League, the teams may occasionally lay back, but the fans never will.

’10 to Track’ soccer matches for Relegation Monday – bring on the pain!

After a weekend of most glorious footyball from around the world, Noob brings the sadness!

Let’s spend our ten most important matches around the world today on teams fighting against or even resigned to Relegation.  Honor the falling and fallen.

First, a few matches that matter much for happier reasons —

  1. Denmark vs. Ukraine – women’s World Cup qualification (UEFA)

Reminder:  Groups of five, winners advance, some of the best #B* finishers will play another qualifying round.

FIFA-ranked #13 Denmark trail #27 Ukraine by a point for Bth * in their Group.  Neither will catch Sweden to win it, so this is must-win for both sides.  Runner-up is their only shot, with nothing guaranteed even then.

RESULT:   Denmark   1-0

*Number B and B-th replace #2 and second in lists.  It’s a Quest for Change. Get on board, Noobites.

So stay with the women’s sports today!

B.  “Red Bull” Leipzig vs. Bayer Leverkusen – Bundesliga

The German league title has been long since decided.  The top three seem clear.  But which club will get the fourth and final Champions League invite is up in the air and close.

Leipzig is in a tie for 4th, and has played one fewer game than their peer.  They are unbeaten since their ghastly February.  Leverkusen are behind them by only one point, and have also played one fewer game than most league teams.  Leverkusen haven’t scored in their last two league matches.  Advantage – Caffeinated Ones.  (2:30 PM Eastern, FS2)

RESULT:   Leverkusen   1-4    They are now in 4th.  Leipzig drops into a tie for 5th, and down on the tiebreaker.

Image result for too much Red bull

And welcome to the new world.

The world of Number B.

  1. FCSB vs. Craiova – Romania Liga I

#B hosts #3 in the league’s championship division, and they’ve played one fewer game each than #1.

FCSB only trails #1 by a point.  Craiova is another four back.  They need a win, stay alive with a draw, would be devastated by a loss.  Even as a top-20 league in Europe, this one only gets one Champions League berth.

RESULT:   FCSB   2-0

  1. France vs. Canadia – women’s international friendly

Women’s World Cup isn’t until next year, but say hello to a match that could be a Final as easily as any.  These are the #5 and #4-ranked teams in the world.  Noob doesn’t know how easily this is found in North America, but it’s on at 3:00 PM Eastern on TV5MONDE, a global French language broadcast channel.

RESULT:   France   1-0

Image result for tv5monde logo 2.5x the amount of monde as TV#BMONDE

And now, bring on the pain!!

  1. Genclerbirligi vs. Galatsaray – Turkey Super Lig

What better way to start the Relegation Watch sadness than in Turkey?  At least they get to host, but second-to-last place Gencler (yep, we’re tight like that) are hosting perhaps the league best team.  Genc-y only scores one about every other match, so this might get very ugly, very quickly.  (1:00 PM, beIN Sports)

Fun Fact:  Genclebirligi are knows as “The Wind of Ankara”.  It’s because they blow.

The Management:  Noob!

Fine.   It’s half-true anyway.

RESULT:   Gencler   1-0     It’s a Relegation Monday miracle!

  1. Estudiantes vs. Chacarita Juniors – Argentina Premier

Chacarita is on Relegation Monday enough to be charged rent.  They’re last in the multiyear table to determine which four clubs will get the boot, and by a lot.  Estudiantes are a midtable bunch.  (8:15 PM, TyC Sports International)

RESULT:   Chacarita   0-2      More Monday miracle action!

Yup.  Choco-rita.

  1. Juventus Bucaresti vs. Sepsi OSK – Romania Liga I

Romania – come for the featured championship subdivision match, stay for the wailing and gnashing of teeth!

These are the bottom two in the league’s Relegation Play-out subdivision.  They’re not so far back as to be without hope, so we may still see some fire in them.

Fun Fact:  Juventus Bucaresti are actually the intellectually-challenged spawn of Italian Juventus players from a generation ago, exiled to Romania.

The Management:  Noob!

What?  Make a new Page for the site and counter my claim there, The Management.  I’m working here.

RESULT:   Sepsi   0-2

  1. Etar vs. Dunav Ruse – Bulgaria First Pro League

This league has divided into championship and Relegation play-out subdivisions as well.  But why keep things simple?  They then divide the eight Play-out clubs into two smaller subdivisons.   The bottom two of each of those will play a bracketed tournament to see who stays and who goes.

These two are at the bottom of their subdivision and won’t be climbing up.  All that remains to be determined is which will host their bracketed-round match later on.

RESULT:   Etar   2-1

Fun Fact:  Etar are the Boyars, former Russian family of nobility

Not Russian

  1. Vitez vs. Celik Zenica – Bosnia and Herzegovina Premier

Bottom two of the Relegation subdivision in one of UEFA’s weaker leagues.  Sadness upon sadness.

Fun Fact:  Vitez means “knight” in southern Slavic languages, and so their team is The Knights.

RESULT:   CZ   0-4

  1. Avellino vs. Perugia – Serie B

Is there any possible sunshine on a Relegation Monday?   Italy!

The bottom three are automatically booted to Serie C.  The next two have a Play-out match at season’s end, and the winner gets to stay up.  That’s where we find Avellino. And they’re statistically much better than the teams below them.   In fact, Noobstradamus is calling this one for the fighting Lupi!  #6 Perugia will fall.

RESULT:   Avellino   2-0     Wait, I got one right?  I mean, ummm… oh bloody hell.

’10 to Track’ soccer matches for Sunday, 4/8. Will the Zlatan strike again in MLS?

The ten extra most bestest soccer matches for the newish American fan, in living color.

And yes, Noob is blatantly fishing for a sponsor.  Little Caesar’s, step on up!

  1. L.A. Galaxy vs. Sporting KC – MLS

Sporting KC seems to have really changed tacks since last season.  Nowadays they’re scoring and giving up goals both like crazy.   In ’17, neither was true.  They finished 5th in the West then, are 1st now.  But it’s very early.

The Galaxy are still riding high on their last game, their first ever against expansion LAFC.  Two late goals from aged European superstar and late-game sub Zlatan Ibrahimovich won them the match.  They finished in last place last year, but have some early momentum now.

RESULT:   KC   0-2

Image result for Zlatan on a horse

Zlatan is egotistical and weird and cool.   But can he give MMA fighter Conor McGregor in all that?

B.  Chelsea vs. West Ham United – English Premier

With five games to go, defending champions-Chelsea’s fate is all but sealed – 5th place, Europa League berth.  They’re nine points behind the next two in the table.

West Ham are a few spots above the Relegation Zone, probably need just three more points to feel secure in remaining in the top flight for next year.

RESULT:   1-1

Lowercase Number B  shines for you.

  1. Lincoln City vs. Shrewsbury Town – EFL Trophy

It’s the Final, at Wembley!  A reminder: this tournament has featured League One and Two (third and fourth-tier) clubs, plus some higher-ups’ youth squads.

Lincoln City are a good League Two side.  Noob-fave Shrewsbury are an excellent League One team, and very likely getting promoted a league for next season. And Shrew-Town is the site of the death of the ignoble Harry “Hotspur” Percy, Noob says they deserve all the hardware they can get.

RESULT:   Lincoln City   1-0

  1. Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid – La Liga

EMost of the drama is gone for these two for the league season.  They #3 and #B, and neither will fall out of the top four and a Champions League bid, nor will either catch #! Barcelona.

But rather than diminishing this game, it will enhance it.  This is the one remaining league match they have that means something.  Real will look to push the pace as they always do.  Atletico have done it with defense all season.

RESULT:   1-1

Image result for bubble soccer funny

Bubble soccer.  Not so enhancing.

  1. U.S.A. vs. Mexico – women’s international friendly

Muricuh won 4-1 over Mexico in Jacksonville just three days ago.  Let’s do it again in Houston!

RESULT:   USA   6-2

  1. Eintracht Frankfurt vs. 1899 Hoffenheim – Bundesliga

This match is “merely” #6 versus #7, but the stakes are high.

Frankfurt is actually tied for 5th (down on tiebreaker), and just a point behind fading Leipzig for 4th.   Germany gets four Champions league berths.  Hoffenheim are only one spot and three more points back in the table. 4th-place RasenBallsport (Red Bull) Leipzig have been on fire of late, but if that caffeine buzz of theirs, one of these two could jump up.

RESULT:   1-1

Image result for Red Bull on fire

Too literal, Dan the Intern-o Inferno.

  1. Marseille vs. Montpelier – Ligue 1

Marseille are in 3rd and hanging on for dear life to the league’s last Champions league berth, only two points up on Lyon.

Montpelier are tied for 6th, just a point off the pace for a Europa League invite.  Theirs hosts today score twice as often than they do.  This is too severe a road test for them.

RESULT:   0-0

  1. Torino vs. Inter Milan – Serie A

It’s always about getting into Champions League.   Inter are in 4th, the last table spot to qualify.  They lead Lazio by just two in the table.

Torino have finally found their footing the last two matches after a four—game slide.  They’ll have to keep up the improved defense against Inter.

RESULT:   Torino   1-0

Image result for Torino football funny

This Torino player needs head meds.

And when Noob thinks so, boy howdy.

  1. Gent vs. Club Brugge – Belgium First Division A

Since the league divided into Championship and Relegation divisions, Gent have moved up from 4th to 3rd, continuing to sport the best defense.  But it’s not that much better than #! Brugge’s, and the visitors score in spades.

RESULT:   Gent   1-0

  1. Rosenborg vs. Molde – Norway Eliteserien

Noob loves finishing T2T on #1 vs. #2.  This league is just getting going, but these two finished as such last year.  So what if it’s barely a top 30 league in Europe?  Rosenborg had the best O and D going last year, yet didn’t exactly run away with the title.

RESULT:   Rosenborg   4-0

’10 to Track” soccer matches for Saturday, 4/7 – Noob gets hurt, still previews MLS, Liga MX, and all the best

The ten most important soccer matches for newish American fans to follow.  How much does Noob love bringing them to you?  I unexpectedly took a hurled ball of uncooked dough to the face at local pizza chain restaurant Friday night.  Broken glasses, cut nose — it had been thrown about 75 feet on a line.

We can’t be stopped, Noobites!  The icing down is on hold, the labor of love is completed.  All things are possible through Christ.  Even goofy nonsense like this.

The Management would like to apologize for this and the all-too frequent questionable things our nutjob– wait, hold on.  What?

The Management apologizes for the interruption.  Noob’s story actually checks out.  Thank you to for the confirmation, Dan the Intern-o Inferno.  Carry on.

  1. Chicago Fire vs. Columbus Crew – MLS

After a 3rd-place finish last year in the tougher Western Conference, Chicago are off to a winless start here early in the 2018 campaign.  They’re a strange bird, statistically.  Last year, they finished better than their GD might’ve indicated.  This year, it’s the opposite.

Columbus are working hard to win more hearts in their hometown, as a very possible move to Austin is looming over them.  They finished 2nd in the East last season, and are playing fantastic ball so far in ’18.  Since they’re doing it on both sides of the ball, Noob looks for them to get a road win against the Fire.  8:30 PM Eastern, NBA League Pass 8, 9)

RESULT:   Chicago   1-0

Image result for Columbus Crew meme

And get that man a real shirt.   And a salad

B.  Manchester City vs. Manchester United – English Premier

If you’re interested enough to visit Noob’s humble, goofy funhouse of soccer thoughts, the Manchester Derby is a known quantity for you.   And it’s #1 vs. #B, which is always exciting, even if the hosts are miles ahead in the table.

What Noob thinks makes this most interesting is that is that City just got manhandled in Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League a couple days ago.  Where is their confidence, how much will they have the tank, will they conserve their best players for the second leg of their Quarterfinal CL match with Liverpool, where did Noob leave his pants, did Noob have a good time?

So many questions.  Most will be answered today.   One might hope the last two remain a mystery.  (12:30 PM, Telemundo)

RESULT:   Man Utd.   2-3       WHAT a match!   All Utd’s goals came in the second half.   Had City won, it would’ve been the earliest any Premier team had ever clinched the league title.

Image result for letter B pants

Number B stands for bear.  Bear who found or never lost his pants.

  1. Cincinnati vs. Louisville – USL

Cincinnati grabbed their fair share and then some of the headlines last year.   Their attendance figures were off the charts for a second-tier league club, and they made a deep run into the U.S. Open Cup.

Louisville must hate them.  “We won the league!  You only finished 6th in our conference!”  A wedding in the family is what’s keeping Noob from attending this one in person.  Should be physical, scrappy and awesome.

RESULT:   Louisville   0-1

  1. Monterrey vs. Pumas de UNAM – Liga MX

Noob loves these half-seasons, Apertura and Clausura, in Mexico (and other places).  Only 17 games to decide things.  Every match means a ton.

Pumas are in a 3-way tie for the last two slots in the postseason Liguilla.  Given that they finished last place in the Clausura season, this is incredible.  They’re scoring more than half again as much as before.  Still, they’re not as good as the clubs they’re tied with, and Monterrey is one of the best there, period.

RESULT:   Monterrey   2-1

Image result for puma funny

  1. Germany vs. Czech Republic – women’s World Cup qualification (UEFA)

Germany are #3 in the world, but just #B in their Group right now.  They won at Czech Republic 0-1 earlier in this tournament.  One would think they would handle business again against just the #33-ranked side.

Only the winner of each Group of five is automatically qualified to the WC.  The four best #B finishers will have another qualification event to get through.

RESULT:   Germany   4-0

  1. Connah’s Quay vs. Bangor City – Welsh FA Cup

Connah’s Quay knocked the Premier league’s best team – T.N.S. last round – and so now are themselves the favorite.  They are tied for #B in the league with Bangor.  This is a knockout tournament, so there’s no return trip home for a second leg for Bangor here.

RESULT:   Connah’s Quay   6-1

  1. Marathon vs. Motagua – Honduras National League

Tied for 1st with just three matches to go in the Clausura (second half-season)!  In the Apertura, Marathon won by just one point in the table over Motagua.  But Noobstradamus is prognosticating a road win today and league title for Motagua.  They’ve really stepped things up on the defensive end.

RESULT:   Marathon   2-1

Image result for noobstradamus

I ran the first marathon.  Back then, we just called it one long-ass run.

  1. Alkmaar vs. Eindhoven – Dutch Eredivisie

Alkmaar are in 3rd, and only the top two finishers will qualify for the next Champions League.  At five points back of #B Ajax with just five matches to go, they’re all going to feel like must wins.  And that could feel bad, because Eindhoven are #1.

RESULT:   Eindhoven   2-3

Image result for dutch sadness

It’s hard to see sad Dutch people in trademark orange.

Noob does not know why.

  1. Spartak Trnava vs. Slovan Bratislava – Slovak Super Liga

Ranking in the bottom half of European leagues (#32), Slovkia’s top flight only gets one club into the next CL.  Slovan Bratislava only have five matches to make up seven points, so this really is must-win.  They’ve got the best offense in the league by far, but Trnava’s defense has been just as dominant.

RESULT:   Trnava   1-0

  1. Al Ahli vs. Al Hilal – Saudi Arabia Pro League

This is a two- horse league.  Meet your stallions.  They are already far enough ahead to be named the two clubs getting invited to the next AFC Champions League.

Al Hilal lead in the table by just a point.   They have the league’s best defense, but aren’t that much better than Al Ahli in that regard.  And Al Ahli rule on offense by a mile.  Methinks there will be a change at #1 today.

RESULT:   0-0

Image result for pizza dough funnyYou mock my pain, Dan the Intern-o Inferno?  Meanie.

It was too dense a doughball to splat like that.

’10 to Track’ soccer matches for Globetrotting Friday! Quality football, a Bob Ross appearance, and The Management hurts Noob’s feelings

We’ve got a super-solid lineup for “the ten most important matches to follow for the newish American fan”, especially considering it’s a Friday!

Fear not.  By Track’s end, we’ll still Globetrot for one unusual desitination.  Until then, enjoy the weirdest soccer previewing on the interblag.

  1. New England Revolution vs. Montreal Impact – MLS

Both these clubs missed the Playoffs last season.  But they’ve each won two out of four early for promising starts.

Noob doesn’t think either have the offense to stay in the top half of the Eastern Conference standings.  Which might prove me wrong today though?  (7:30 PM Eastern, NBA League Pass 8)

RESULT:   New England   4-0    Montreal lost a player to a red card pretty early.

Nostalgia time —

B.  England vs. Wales – women’s World Cup qualification (UEFA)

Wales are 3-1-0 in this Group.  All three of their wins have been 1-0 (or 0-1).

England, meanwhile, are 3-0-0 and have outscored their opponents 15-zilch.  Wales make qualify for World Cup by finishing #B in this bunch, but they’ll be dragon soup today.

RESULT:   0-0     no soup for Noob

Image result for Letter B dragon

Danger!  Number B about to be carried away by dragon over soup-threat!

  1. Cardiff City vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers – English Championship

The top two face off in England’s second division!  If they finish as such (likely), they’ll both be automatically promoted to Premier League next season.  Still, Fulham and Aston Villa aren’t that far back of Cardiff, so they’re still plenty motivated.

To win today, Cardiff will have to control the pace.  They play the best defense in that league.  WW have the best offense though.

RESULT:   Wolverhampton   0-1

  1. Puebla vs. Pachuca – Liga MX

Puebla are in a three-way tie for the last two spots in the table that will make the postseason Liguilla (playoffs).

Pachuca are only two points behind them, but have to leap several teams to make the top eight themselves.  Noob’s nowhere near convinced their wide-open style/Swiss cheese defense (though good offense) can get it done today.  (8:00 PM, Univision Deportes)

RESULT:   Pachuca   2-6      Of course, Noob could be mistaken…

Image result for soccer swiss cheese

  1. Waterford vs. Cork City – Irish Premier

Promoted to Premier this season, Waterford continue to impress.  They’re tied for #B in the table, just a point off Cork City’s pace.   They don’t score anywhere near enough to likely stay there, but it’s fun to see new blood near the top for now.

RESULT:   Waterford   2-1    Waterford move into a tie for 1st.  4 red cards were issued in the final minute of regulation.

  1. France vs. Nigeria –women’s international friendly

World Cup tuneup!   Maybe it’s a little early to call it that, since the women’s isn’t until 2019.    But France are automatically in as the host nation (and would qualify anyway, trust me).    Africa’s qualification tournament doesn’t start until summer, but Nigeria is one of that federation’s four strongest.  So tuneup, says I!

RESULT:   France   8-0     Apparently Nigeria tuned out

Image result for you're a little weird

Noob can relate.  Thanks, Bob.

  1. Sporting Charleroi vs. Anderlecht – Belgian First Division A

Belgium’s top league has divided into Championship and Relegation subdivisions now. These two finished the regular season #B and #3, but Gent has now passed them both.  Since Belgium only gets two berths into Champions League, this is a vital match for both sides.

Charleroi better start finding the back of the net again.  They’re in a drought.

RESULT:   Anderlecht   1-2

  1. Ludogorets Razgrad vs. CSKA-Sofia – Bulgaria First Pro League

Bulgaria’s top league is ranked in the top half of UEFA (24th), but that’s still only good for one Champions league berth next year.  These two are #1 and #B, separated by only three points in the table, and very similar statistically as well.  Dynamite matchup.

RESULT:   Ludogorets Razgrad   3-2     Sofia went down a man to a red card early in the 2nd half.  LR scored the equalizer and winning goals very late.

Image result for soccer dynamite

  1. Jong Ajax vs. NEC Nijmegen – Dutch Eerste Divisie

It’s a tie for #B!   And they’re just a point out of 1st place, too.  As a reserve side, Jong Ajax isn’t eligible to be promoted.  But the Fighting Nijets are.

RESULT:   J.Ajax   3-2

The Management would like to apologize to our readers.  NEC are not the “Nijets” or even “Nidgets”, and even the correctly-spelled latter one would be a terrible nickname in any case.  Thank you for—

They didn’t seem to have a mascot.  So I gave them one.

You’re the Nidget.

That hurts me.  Just because you may be right doesn’t mean you don’t need to shut up.

  1. Waterhouse vs. Harbour View – Jamaica Premier

We need us some Jamaica time after that high drama!  4th place hosts 5th.  Noob leans libertarian-ish, so while not a user himself, smoke it if you’ve got it.

RESULT:   Waterhouse   2-1     Turns out this was played yesterday.  And that it was the second leg of a league playoff Quarterfinal!  Waterhouse advances on aggregate, 3-1.

That’s the spirit.

’10 to Track’ soccer matches for Thursday, 4/5 – plus Noob battles Dan the Intern-o Inferno

Plenty of high-quality footyball in today’s ten most important games for the newish American soccer fan to follow.

Just be warned, things might get ugly here with me and the Intern.   He’s a nefarious ne’er-do-well, and Noob should slash his non-existent pay yet again.

  1. U.S.A. vs. Mexico – international women’s friendly

Women’s World Cup isn’t until next year, but these two are already qualified.  They are ranked #1 and #25 respectively.  It shouldn’t be close, but it’s hard to know how much the game will be used by each team to test players who may or may not make the WC rosters.  (7:00 PM Eastern, FS1)

RESULT:   USA   4-1

B.  Arsenal vs. CSKA Moscow – Europa League

And then there were eight.  Europe’s almost-but-not Champions League has reached the first leg of its Quarterfinals.   Some folks diss this event, but remember:  the winner gets an automatic invite to Champions League next year, no matter how they do in their league season.

Russia’s league actually ranks 6th in Europe.  But England is England.  Arsenal by a goal feels right.  (3:05 PM, FS1)

Number B?  Um, Noob’s having trouble as it is getting folks on board with you replacing Number Two.

Going Russian for any length of time isn’t going to help.

  1. Red Bull Leipzig vs. Marseille – Europa League

These two are about as even as it gets, on paper.  Wish this one were going to be on teevee, could easily be the best match of the day.  But Fox is opting for Atletico Madrid and Sporting Lisbon on FS2.  Portugal sucks, that match won’t be close.  Fools!

RESULT:   Leipzig   1-0

  1. Bolivar vs. Atletico National – Copa Libertadores

Group Stage continues in South America’s version of Champions league.  Top two from each pod of four will advance to the Knockout Stage.

Colombia’s football is much stronger than Bolivia’s, and this match reflects that.  Still, Bolivar as host makes this about an even match.  Atletico have won both their Group matches, while Bolivar have drawn in theirs.  (8:30 PM, Fox Deportes)

RESULT:   Bolivar   1-0

Image result for copa libertadores funnyYep, that’s a straight up Copa Libertadores punch.

And in South American football, that’s practically just flirting.

  1. Estudiantes vs. Santos – Copa Libertadores

Argentinian and Brazilian powers collide… and everyone gets yellow cards.  Klutzes.

RESULT:   Santos   0-1

  1. Switzerland vs. Scotland – UEFA women’s World Cup qualification

Seven Groups of five here.  The winners all qualify for World Cup.  The four best runners up will meet in a playoff.

Switzerland haven’t mathematically gotten in yet, but they’re running away with the Group.  Scotland are one of two teams next up at six points each in the table.  Mighty offense versus super defense.  FIFA ranks them #8 and #32, respectively.

RESULT:   Switzerland   1-0

Gah!!

Thanks for the nightmares, Dan the Intern-o Inferno.

  1. Austria vs. Serbia – UEFA women’s World Cup qualification

Spain are going to win this group, so the battle is for the second slot and hoping for enough points to make the aforementioned Playoff.  Serbia have little hope, but Austria are in 3rd and can at least see some daylight.  They are FIFA-ranked #21 and #43.

RESULT:   1-1

  1. Carabobo vs. Caracas – Venezuela Premier

#1 hosts #3 in one of South America’s lesser leagues.  They will get the minimum four berths into next year’s Copa Libertadores.  Carabobo play a wide open style, so look for lots o’ goals here.

RESULT:   0-0   or not…

Smart move, Dan the Intern-o Inferno.

Noob’s coming for ya’!!

  1. SonderskyjE vs. Brondby – Denmark FA Cup

This is a Quarterfinal knockout match, pitting the 8th and 1st-place league teams against one another.  Brondby are probably considered a small favorite, even on the road.  Blah blah blahWHAT is up with that capital E on the end of that club name?!  Interrobang!   Aggressive need for knowledge!

RESULT:   Brondby   0-1   AET

  1. Suduva vs. Atlantas Klaipeda – Lithuania A Lyga

OK, deep breath after feature match #9.   We finish the Track with a league just a few games into its season.  That said, these clubs are already in familiar positions, 1st and 3rd place.  This is the 43rd-ranked league in Europe.

RESULT:   Suduva   2-1

’10 to Track’ soccer matches for Wednesday, 4/3 – Champions Leagues-ness

Often of late, Noob will just do a single T2T for the three midweek days.  But there’s just too much excellent footyball to condense!

  1. Guadalajara vs. New York Red Bulls – CONCACAF Champions League

Guadalajara are the more accomplished team internationally.  But wow are they struggling in the Liga MX Clausura (second half-season).

Red Bulls absolutely wrecked Tijuana in the quarterfinals.   Noob rarely gets in the weeds on player specifics, but watch for the amazing goalkeeping of Luis Robles.

Noob’s guessing NYRB can get a least a draw on the road here in the first leg, then advance to the final with a win in Leg Two.

RESULT:   Guadalajara   1-0

Image result for Luis Robles Red Bulls funny

Cute factor, Luis!

Kids, too. 🙂

B.  Liverpool vs. Manchester City – UEFA Champions League

Because they’re hosting the first leg, Liverpool are maybe an even match for Man City today.  Liverpool will have to ratchet up the defense.  Unless they keep a clean sheet, Man City will get a road win.

RESULT:   Liverpool   3-0

Image result for dirty letter B

Unclean Number B!  Those bloodstains will never come out.

  1. Barcelona vs. AS Roma – UEFA Champions League

Barcelona are the best team in the world.  Next.

RESULT:   Barcelona   4-1

  1. Ulsan Hyundai vs. Melbourne Victory – AFC Champions League

Top two in each Group of four qualify for the Knockout Stage.  These two are tied for #B in theirs.   Noob says advantage Victory, as South Korea’s league season is just starting up.  Australia’s is closer to done than not, so teams there are in top form.

RESULT:   Ulsan    6-2

Don’t quite get it.

Don’t need to get it.

  1. Gremio vs. Monagas – Copa Libertadores

Gremio are the defending champions.  They will wallop their Venezuelan guests.

RESULT:   Gremio   4-0

  1. Zacatepec vs. Toluca – Copa MX

Minnow alert!   They’re only 8th place even in second-tier Ascenso MX, but here’s Zacatepec getting to host for a chance at the Final in the Clausura (second half-season) edition of Mexico’s Cup.

Toluca, meanwhile lead the top flight.  They’ve done it on the defensive side of the ball.  If they can score first, they will keep and clean sheet and advance.

  1. AC Milan vs. Inter Milan – Serie A

Intracity rivalries always fascinate Noob!   And this one has a lot at stake.  ACM aren’t going to Champions League – they’re in 6th and too many points out of 4th to catch up.  But they can play spoiler to Inter!  Lazio only trail Inter by one point for that last CL spot.

Inter are better on both sides of the ball and should have the motivation.  Noobstradamus is prognosticating 1-2 Inter!

RESULT:   0-0

  1. Alianza vs. CD FAS – El Salvador Premier

#1 hosts #B!  Noob doesn’t think CD FAS have the defensive capability to compete today.  In fact, I’m guessing they’ll fall out of the top four, not even make the league postseason.

RESULT:   now slated for tomorrow

  1. Hapoel Be’er Sheva vs. Beitar Jerusalem – Israel Premier

Three teams are within five points of Be’er Sheva for 1st in the championship division of this league.  Beitar Jerusalem are #B, just one point behind.   As the goal-scoring behemoth of the league, it will be interesting to see if they push the ball or play leaning towards a draw.

RESULT:   Be’er Sheva   3-1

  1. Sutjeska vs. Buducnost Podgorica – Montenegro First League

This league is ranked 44th of 55 by UEFA.  And Sutjeska are light years better than all comers this season.  Still, this is #1 vs. #B, and is thusly deemed Trackable.

RESULT:   Sutjeska   3-2

’10 to Track’ soccer matches for Tuesday, 4/3 – Champions Leagues galore

Midweek schedules are all about the Cups, and this one is going to be a humdinger.   Champions Leagues on three continents are repped today

0.  Toronto vs. CF America – CONCACAF Champions League (posted day of, edit)

Noob truly lives up to his name.  I knew this match was today, but inadvertently deleted it from some notes.  Mea culpa, Noobites.

Toronto would be doing well to even get a draw at home against CFA.  I;ll be pulling for the Canadiaian club, sure, but going to Mexico tied with a puncher’s chance of winning and moving on to the tournament Final would be cool.  (8:00 PM Eastern, Univision Deportes)

RESULT:   Toronto   3-1

  1.  Juventus vs. Real Madrid – UEFA Champions League

Juve haven’t loss a match in any competition since last November.  Still, the Serie A title race has been and remains close.  So it will be interesting to see how much they have in the tank for this first leg-Quarterfinal match.

Real Madrid might be in better shape.   They’re in 3rd in La Liga now, have opened up a huge gap between themselves and any challengers for one of the league’s four Champions league slots for next year (and have no shot at 1st).  It’s easier to imagine they’ve paced themselves in preparation for a title run here.  (2:45 PM, FS1)

RESULT:   Real   0-3     Noob posted in multiple places on the Tweeterbox(@SoccerNoobUSA) that Real would win 0-6.  Half right!

B.  Sevilla vs. Bayern Munich – UEFA Champions League

Did you watch Bayern throttle Borussia Dortmund 6-0 this weekend?  Dortmund’s near the top of the Bundesliga table.  Bayern will lay waste to Sevilla, who aren’t much about average in La Liga this year.   (2:45 PM, ESPN Deportes)

RESULT:   Bayern   1-2

  1. Libertad vs. The Strongest – Copa Libertadores

These two each won their first and only game of the Group Stage so far in South America’s Champions League.  The Paraguayan home side is better on paper.  Will the power of Bolivia’s super-douchey club name carry them through?  Here’s to hoping not.

RESULT:   Libertad   3-0

  1. Universidad de Chile vs. Racing Club – Copa Libertadores

The top two from each group of four will advance to the Knockout Stage.  These two also won their first Group matches.  Argentina’s Racing Club is the most accomplished of these four featured today.  UdC would be doing well to get a draw, even at home.

RESULT:   1-1

Back in ’67, Racing Club stars had hot dog thighs.

  1. Al-Garrafa vs. Al-Jazira – AFC Champions League

They’ve played four of the six matches of the Group Stage in Asia.  The top two from each four will advance to the Knockout Stage.  These two are tied for #B.  Al-Jazira (UAE) won the first match with Garrafa (Qatar) 3-2.

RESULT:   Al-Jazira   2-3     High drama!   Someone for Garrafa got a second yellow (and so a red, and booted) in the 90′.  Then someone from Al-Jazira got the go-ahead goal that same minute.

  1. Crusaders vs. Coleraine – Northern Ireland Premier

This league is a two-horse race, and these are the steeds, heading down the home stretch.  Only one can advance from here to next year’s Champions League.  Crusaders lead by two points.  Best offense vs. best defense.  A win here at home and they can perhaps begin chilling the champagne.

RESULT:   1-1

Umm…

  1. Gornick Zabrze vs. Legia Warsaw – Poland FA Cup

This is the first leg of a Semifinal, pitting the 4th and 3rd-place top-league teams.  Zabrze can score in bunches, should head to Warsaw with a lead in the tie.

RESULT:   1-1

  1. Gorica vs. Aluminij – Slovenia FA Cup

This is also the first leg of a Semfinal.  Aluminij could be forgiven for not putting all their eggs in this basket, as they’re only one slot above having to play in the league’s the Relegation Playout.  Gorica are a middling, 6th-place side.

RESULT:   Aluminij   1-2

Umm, Part Two…

  1. Ruzomberok vs. Zilina – Slovakia FA Cup

Not even sure if this is a one-off or a two-legged tie.  But it is a Semifinal.  These are the 6th and 4th-place teams form the country’s top league.

RESULT:   Ruzomberok   2-1

  1. Debrecen vs. Budapest Honved – Hungary FA Cup

4th and 5th-place teams from Hungary’s top-flight league.  This is the second match of a two-legged Quarterfinal tie.  Leg One went scoreless.

’10 to Track’ soccer matches for Relegation Monday! (4/2) – Embrace the suckitude

Noob’s greatest joy is to filter and bring to light the ten most important matches for new-ish American fans every day or week-part.  Mondays, in the afterglow of superhot action around the world, the schedules get a bit thinner.

Instead of taking respite, no!  We primarily put our focus on teams possibly about to get Relegated, booted to lower divisions, perhaps never to see the light of Premier day again.  Enjoy the likely end of these clubs’ halcyon days, embrace their suckitude.

  1. Sunderland vs. Sheffield Wednesday – English Championship

Sunderland aren’t out of time, but they’re getting there.  Seven matches left to go in the tier-two league season and they’re in second-to-last, five points deep in the Relegation Zone.  Hosting a below-average SW team (17th place) is a great chance for them to pick up three points.

Fun Fact:   Sunderland’s “black cats” nickname may be a reference to an artillery base from Napoleonic times – “the black cat battery”.

RESULT:   Sheffield Wednedsday   1-3     SW moved to 9th, just a couple points out of the last Promotion Playoff slot.

B.  Asteras Tripolis vs. Platanias – Greek Super League

Platanias are so deep in last place they can’t see the sun.   They’ve only won or drawn in six matches all season, less than half of the next-worst club.  Tripolis is pretty average, but should handle business at home.

Fun Fact:  Platanias are from Chania, one of the four regional areas of Crete, informally and simply referred to locally as “western Crete”.

RESULT:   Tripolis   4-0

  1. Olimpo vs. Temperley – Argentina Premier

These two are the better of the four in the multi-year Relegation Zone, could actually climb out.   But neither is playing like they will, being in the bottom three this season.  (6:00 PM Easterm TyC Sports International)

Fun Fact:  Olimpo’s home city of Bahia Blanca is the leading city in the country in basketball.

RESULT:   1-1

  1. Pogon Szczecin vs. Slask Wroclaw – Poland Ekstraklasa

Poland’s top league soon divides into title playoff and relegation-playout divisions.  These two are far enough down that they cannot avoid the latter.

Fun Fact:  OK, not “fun”, but interesting perhaps: Szczecin was founded by Poles who were moved west in the country after the Soviet Union took over eastern parts of the country in 1945.

RESULT:   Szczecin   3-2

Image result for pogon szczecin

They must be good guys, looks like they got chosen for House Gryffindor to Noob.

  1. Poli Timisoara vs. Sepsi OSK – Romania Liga I

This league as divided as well.  The bottom two get Relegated, while the next team up has to play another playoff with a second-tier team.  Timisoara hold the latter position.  Sepsi are in last.

Fun Fact:  Timisoara is co-owned by the local university, city and county governments.

RESULT:   2-2

  1. Septemvri Sofia vs. Etar – Bulgaria First League

Bulgaria’s league goes an extra step for Relegation.   Right now, the bottom eight teams are playing in two four-team divisions.  The bottom two from each will then play a bracketed Relegation playout toiurnament.  Septemvri are high enough up in 2nd place that they should be safe.  Etar is in last in their Group, definitely bound for the Playout.

Fun Fact:  Septemvri’s home pitch isn’t good enough for official matches, so those get played at fellow league team Bistrista’s field.

RESULT:   S.Sofia   1-0

New Septemvri Stadium is being built.  This is an artist’s rendering.

  1. Sport Boys Warnes vs. Aurora – Bolivia Premier

Aurora were promoted to Bolivia’s top division this year.  It’s early, but they’re in position to get possibly booted right back down.  The last-place finisher will go automatically, second-to-last (Aurora, right now) will have a playoff with a second-tier team.

Fun Fact:  Aurora are from Cochabamba, a mountain valley city where it’s springlike all the time, and so is known as “the City of Eternal Spring”.

RESULT:   Aurora   1-2    It’s a Relegation Monday miracle!  Aurora jump to 8th in the aggregate table, well out of danger.  For now.

And now for your non-Relegation pleasure —

  1. Esteghlal vs. Al-Rayyan – AFC Champions League

The Group stage of qualification continues for Asia’s premier club tournament.  The top two from each Group of four will qualify out of this round.

These two teams are tied for first, but with two matches to go at least one could be caught by 3rd-place Al-Ain.  The Iranian hosts today are probably as good as the best MLS teams, to give an idea of quality.  Qatar’s visiting side should be about a goal underdog today.

RESULT:   Esteghlal   2-0

Image result for underdog cartoon meme

  1. Young Boys vs. Basel – Swiss Super League

Young Boys of Bern are running away with the title.  But the league is strong enough that it gets two berths into next year’s Champions League.  Basel are #B, but ahead of 3rd-place St. Gallen by only three points.  This match is best offense versus best defense.  YBB should be able to control the pace.

RESULT:   2-2

  1. Wacker Innsbruck vs. Weiner Neustadt – Austria First League

For a change on a Monday, Noob had some solid choices for featured matches today.  But I’m still 12 years old in some ways, couldn’t help but include this one.   It’s the Weiner-Wacker derby!

OK, they almost certainly don’t call it that in Austria.  Still, enjoy.  Weiner is tied for 1st and in line for one of the two auto-promotion slots for their Bundesliga.  Wacker Innsbruck is in 3rd, which would have them playing a bottom-rung top-tier team for a chance at promotion themselves.

RESULT:   Innsbruck   2-0    Wacker tops weiner.

’10 to Track’ soccer matches Weekend Edition! Premier, MLS, all the best – plus new league coverage announcement

Hitting the hinterlands of world footyball yesterday was a dream, as always.  But weekends are where T2T gets (comparatively) serious.

Don’t miss the Sunday new league coverage announcement.  It’s gonna be!– well, it’s gonna be content.

Saturday, 3/31

  1. Chicago Fire vs. Portland Timbers – MLS

Both clubs have lost both their games this early season.  Last year, they finished 3rd and 6th in the Western Conference.  (Chicago has been moved into the East now.)  Both teams struggled on defense, at least when compared to other playoff teams.  (6:00 PM Eastern, NBA League Pass 6).

RESULT:   2-2

B.  Chicago Red Stars vs. Portland Thorns – NWSL

Double-header in Bridgeview, IL!   At least Noob assumes both are hosting on their same home pitch.  The 8:15 PM start time for this match suggests it.  These two finished in 4th and 2nd, respectively, last year.

RESULT:   Portland   2-3

Can’t hedge!   You’re either into boring old Number Two or down with Number B.

  1. Paris Saint-Germain vs. AS Monaco – Coupe de la League

The Final!   This is not the FA Cup, but rather a tournament open to pro clubs in just the top three divisions in France.  Given that PSG has demolished all of Ligue 1 this year, Noob wonders if league #B Monaco will be revved up to snatch some hardware away from PSG.

RESULT:   PSG   3-0

  1. Bayern Munich vs. Borussia Dortmund – Bundesliga

1st place is out of reach for 3rd-place Dortmund, so maintaining their top-four place in the table and getting a Champions League invite is the goal.  They’d love even a draw against champ-in-waiting Bayern.  (12:30 PM, Fox Deportes)

RESULT:   Bayern   6-0     not a typo.   this was a terrible, awesome rout

  1. Juventus vs. AC Milan – Serie A

Milan is five points out of 4th place and the last Champions League berth.  1st-place Juventus has only lost twice all year, yet only lead Napoli by two points.

This is a bad matchup for Milan, as they have trouble scoring and Juve has the league’s best defense.  This may well be the world’s most important match this weekend.  (2:45 PM, Rai Italia)

RESULT:   Juve    3-1

  1. Sevilla vs. Barcelona – La Liga

Sevilla does not have a realistic shot of cracking the top four, but they are in line for a Europa League invite, being in 6th place.  7th will get in as well this year, but even that is not guaranteed for Sevilla.  Lots of teams are in the hunt.  Barcelona are undefeated, the best team in the world.  (2:45 PM, beIN Sports)

RESULT:   2-2

  1. Ljubljana vs. Maribor – Slovenia Prva Liga

[loo-blee-ah-nuh] have almost wrapped up the league title.  It’s hard to say historic powerhouse #B Maribor is ever quite completely out of it, but they are ten points back.  This league is only the 30th-strongest in Europa, but Noob is always down for matchups from the very top of tables.

  1. Chelsea vs. Tottenham Sir Topham Hatt Hotspur – English Premier

The only important drama left in Premier’s top of the table is right here.  5th place hosts 4th, a battle for the league’s final Champions League spot next year.   With just eight matches to go, it’s not quite a must-win for Chelsea at five points back.  But they sure as shite can’t lose.

So, c’mon, Chelsea.  Don’t let the traitorously-named Hotspur get the best of you.  Ramp up the so-so offense a bit and take these ne’er-do-wells down!  (11:00 AM, NBCSN)

  1. UNAM Pumas vs. Necaxa – Liga MX

9th vs. 10th doesn’t look intriguing at a glance.  But remember:  the top eight clubs make the Liguilla, the postseason league tournament.

Noobstrdamus has access to the soccer alternate planes, has learned Necaxa will score the road upset today.  It couldn’t be that I read Pumas can’t play D at all.   It’s the first thing.  *nod*

RESULT:   1-1    Prognostication fail.  In fact, Pumas played most of the second half a man down.

RESULT:   Boca Juniors   2-1      Juniors get the go-ahead goal at 90′, open up a huge -9- point lead in the table.
